Blog less than 50 words….

I read the most profound Article (Levasseur 2012) which summarizes my experiences in this course. My passion for change in the pedagogical and goals of education systems in the United States from the 20th century standardized industrial revolution system to the 21st Century Integrative and Innovative systems, and teaching technology from the margins,

Week 15: Reflect- Reflect -Reflect

The reflection for week 15 is on the TCC conference that we attended online and the overview of the speakers at the conference.

I was very impressed with the speakers as many were student presenters and have done exceptional in their research of emerging technology and how it can be used in education.  I have summarized my thoughts and overview of the Conference.

General observation is that the ETEC 647E class is fortunate to be exposed to Universal Distance Education Learning and Teaching  from the creators of TCC conference, and to one day be a presenter will be an honor and privilege.  The collective opinion is that the ETEC program at UH Manoa – College of Education meets all the criteria to enter into the MOOC, SMOC, and/or SPOC market as a major competitor with MIT.  What I learned from doing this assignment is that the field of online learning and teaching needs further research students (PhD ETEC), and  the meaning of true Universal Design was evident in the TCC online conference as well as deep appreciation for the creators of the TCC conference.

Note taking 2.0 Web:  DisruptiveTechnology? #TCC

Week 14 – Attended a TCC online conference on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at 5:30pm HST, and the presenter was Kelson Pakele, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Honolulu, USA.  Kelson Pakele discussed the change in studying systems from print media to the future electronic media.  Interestingly, the apps that Kelson presented to use in reading and studying electronic media included GoodNotes Web to PDF+, Zotero, PaperShip, and Google Drive.   I am not sure, but I think Kelson was a bit nervous because the presentation took a whole 30 minutes. The Zotero app was most applicable for me, since I teach at Kauai Community College, the students are moving to e-text so this app will aid the students to be successful in their online learning. I will explore the GoodNotes app in detail since the survey results revealed that there is a positive correlation between learner and note taking strategies when using GoodNotes.  I am very concerned that the survey results depicted by Kelson Pakele lacks a useful sample size, and the margin of error would have been helpful information to provide in the presentation.

Kelson Pakele ended the presentation with useful note taking apps that will replace the colorful highlighter pens that we all were so accustomed too.  Technology has changed the way we learn, teach, and now take notes from print media to web 2.0 apps that does act as a disruptive technology to the print media industry and all the highlighter pens, bookmakers, and page finder accessories. Overall, Kelson Pakele sparked an interest for a great summer project as I will explore in detail all the apps Kelson shared, and I will repost my blog with my opinion.  Check back in July, and I will be sure to let you know my experience in using the web 2.0 apps for e-texts.

Augmented Reality (AR) – School in the Clouds

Aloha,

I was challenged this week to create a playlist on youtube choosing 5 videos that relates to education and targeting a specific audience.  The audience I chose was anyone interested in teaching and learning about the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs.  The United States Government will be known in the future for skilled STEM careers, so why not create a Career Academy – a School in the Clouds.  I think this will be my statement of objectives for my application to the PhD ETEC degree.  Let me know Yay or Nay.  Take a look at my blog and let me know what you think…..I would appreciate it.

My AR playlist looks at how science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) can used as lesson plans or modules for an online STEM career path orientation program.  Having Students learn about Careers in the STEM field can be ignited to fulfill the mission of the P-20 initiative that is being pushed in the education system, and where  financial aid is being allocated to those fields.  Great ice breaker into the STEM field.

To MOOC or Not To MOOC?

I enrolled in a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) a coursera course from Berklee College of Music, titled Songwriting, instructed by Pat Pattison, and the 6 week course started on February 6, 2014.  The MOOC experience was challenging at first then became more interesting during the course, and surprised at the end of Song Writing course.  The challenge in Week 1 was to understand that Song Writing is telling a story in a way that express your senses and emotions by understanding the Western English Grammar.  In other words, the class is an English 100 course in College but with a poetic twist which was a challenge for me. In the following weeks, the course content continued on the ENG 100 – poetic justice twist with learning how to rhyme and write lines which I found very interesting.  At the end of the course I was very surprised to discover that I am not a song writer or desire to be one in the near future.  However, the best surprise of all was learning to appreciate other artist like John Legend (All Of Me) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwsYvBYZcx4, and my Favorite Song Writer that actually took this same course at Berklee face to face – John Mayer (Edge of Desire, All we ever do is say goodbye, Gravity).  I am learning that the Mil Generation is romantic, creative, and CREATORS – need to learn more about this generation by the music they are listening too and creating…awesome and inspiring.

Thanks for letting me share my thoughts on the MOOC experience, and yes…I will MOOC again!

A hu’i ho!

Annotative Bibliography – iPads

The iPad for Professors: Evaluating a Productivity Tool After One Year. (2011). Chronicle of Higher Education, 57(30), A16.

The iPad for Professors article (2011) depicts 6 professors’ reflection of the first generation iPad after using the iPad for a year.  The article summarizes the professors productivity over the year, were they more productive or less productive after using the iPad for a year.   The reflections by the professors have several commonalities, like the ease of portability being so light in weight, the primary use is for reading and listening to music, and the iPad was ranked very user friendly by the professors.  Many of the professors claimed that the multitasking, and being able to sync cloud computing apps like dropbox contributed to the professors to be more productive.  In conclusion, the article shows that the evaluation of the iPad after a year of use by the professors made them more productive as Professors.  However, the article depicts no evidence of   how course content, delivery, or student learning increased or decreased.  Actually, the article shows that only one professor used the iPad in the classroom as a means of learning using a mobile device.  It was interesting to see how other professors’ use iPads or other tablet devices in their profession.

Mobile and Connected Learning Position Statement

Mobile Devices being used for mobile learning was the topic our team Lehua explored in the bitstrip comic assignment for week 8.  Specifically, the pros and cons of mobile learning K-12 was depicted in the bitstrip, and it was evident that the pros of using mobile learning far out weigh the cons of using mobile devices.

Professionally, as a cooperative education counselor at Kauai Community College (KauCC), I place students with a cooperative education employer for the Accounting Program at KauaiCC.  Therefore, the implications of mobile learning with mobile devices in the workplace is very intriguing.  Intrestingly, social media will be of great importance to the employer as well as reduction in training costs using apps like coursera or other MOOC Harvard and MIT certified courses using your cell phone or tablet.   As an employer, I would be very concerned about the social media policy, especially the decision to designate a social media point person concerning mobile devices will be the norm with the digital natives in the labor market. Especially as the labor market ages in the next 5-10 years the exodus of 65% of the labor market (boomers and traditionalist retire) will open up a large market for a skilled workforce.  Therefore, I believe social media will be one of the desired positions for both employer and employee.

My favorite apps are netflix (I am a hopeless romantic) love the old flicks. Another fav app is itunes since my MOOC “how to be a song writer” has made me unsuccessful as a song writer, but now I listen to the words of songs and one of my favorite song artists are John Legend and John Mayer – the words of the songs they sing are absoutely amazing.  My favorite app is facetime, I get the best of both of best worlds with facetime – virtual yet realtime action.  Gotta love today’s technology – connecting people true Distance Learning.

I flip out every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:25am – 12:05pm.

As a lecturer, I flip the face to face courses every Tuesday and Thursday using the students’ mobile devices.  On Tuesday morning the students will walk in the classroom and their phones will notify them that the assignment has been posted to Laulima. Next,  I give a short 15 minute lecture on the assignment and the key terms that will help attain the SLO’s, I put the students into teams (learning environments), and the students attack the assignment using their mobile devices or their laptops.  I am able to work with the teams giving more quality instruction.  Interestingly, I found students more engaged as mentioned in the reading, Gerstein, J. (2012, June 4). Mobile learning and the flipped classroom: The full picture.(http://usergeneratededucation.wordpress.com/2012/06/04/mobile-learning-and-the-flipped-classroom-the-full-picture/) I tend to provide an environment where the student is operating in the Learner Generated – So What part of the model provided in the reading.   The instructor needs to be prepared since students work at a different pace.  I developed a system where the text and lecture information relates to a Final Project, so once the assignment is complete the student can work on incorporating the assignment to the final project.  It flipping works great!

Here is the link to the bitstrip….who knew I would be making comic strips online.

T-E-A-M…Yah Team Work!

This week’s blog is reflective on team work…and the quote comes to mind there is no “i” in TEAM.  It’s not T- I -M ! Team Iridium was chosen very well, thank you Sensei Bert!  The Collaboration was done on Wednesday shortly after our class meeting, so we had ample time to generate individual inputs into the google doc.  On Wednesday, it was “show time”, and we all “hung out” with google.  It was a productive meeting, and we were able to finalize the proposal that evening.  We have “quick finger” Terri macdraw, her typing skills to dictation is incredible, I think Terri was a dictation secretary in her past life.  “Techy” Sean helped trouble shoot any techy glich we experienced throughout the night!  I was “slow” down and laugh, I thought I was in a game show “The Weakest Link”.   Whatever happened we pulled it off.  Team iridium (unbiased as can be) has the BEST proposal…just saying.

It was great to go through the TEAM building stages very quickly – that is our team accomplished – forming – storming – norming – performing – adjourning very easily with the best product out there.  I may think of outsourcing our team – after all I have a Master’s in Human Resource Management – why not! IRIDIUM…you’re hired!

My First Poem – PEER PRESSURE

For my ETEC 647E – emerging trends class, I was challenged in Week 3 to participate in an assignment where the concept of learning is in creation of knowledge instead of consumption of knowledge.  It was exciting for me to be an active learner instead of a passive learner.  The assignment challenged me to create a poem by reinventing a published author’s poem.  That is, I had to take the published author’s poem, and use each word in the poem as the last word in my reinvented poem.  Just reading the instructions was the first of my struggles with this assignment.

The assignment was taken from The Daily Create  post – “Dig With A Golden Shovel” posted by Karen Richardson.

The original poem I chose to reinvent is by Gwendolyn Brooks titled – “We Real Cool” .  When I first read the poem by Gwendolyn Brooks – We Real Cool, I perceived the poem to be about the Cycle of Life.  I saw how the author of the poem used short words, to portray how life begins with I (me) singing, sinning, and enjoying, then ending in death.  After I reinvented Gwendolyn Brooks poem using the words in her poem as the last words in my poem, I created a poem that talks about peer pressure during a person’s life cycle.  I thought is was really cool (since it was my first poem).  However, my 13-year-old, who won a national contest in 8th grade for her poem, said that my poem, Peer Pressure, sounded like a little baby that didn’t know how to talk.  Well, thank you for that critique!

So, I will let you be the judge…read my poem….and let me know what you think.  Be kind, it’s my first poem.

PEER PRESSURE – by Vera Blalock – based on a poem by Gwendolyn Brooks – We Real Cool.

Oh, and BTW…this is my first blog too!  Image

Look carefully in the picture above.   What am I? What am I doing? Where am I? I have no peer pressure!
